Milward's Millennium Motorcycle Ride

A Summary

British-born Simon Milward, 37, was the General Secretary of the Federation of European Motorcyclists Association from 1992-99, lobbying for reasonable regulations in the E.U. on behalf of a half-million riders. "Seven years with politicians and bureaucrats is enough to drive anyone around the world," says Milward, grinning, explaining why he's blowing his life savings on this journey.

He left Europe on January 1, 2000, on a handmade motorcycle with an Austrian 600cc single cylinder engine, an Italian 11.5 gallon gas tank and parts from eight other countries.

He has ridden 80,000 miles through 29 countries, this last year through the United States. His digital slide show depicts the smuggler's market at the Pakistan-Afghan border, a marriage proposal in the Middle East, two civil wars in Southeast Asia, meeting the Dalai Lama, and nearly drowning in Siberia. It's packed with gasps, laughs, and extraordinary thrills.

On a humanitarian mission, he has raised over $75,000 for Health for All and Doctors Without Borders. He's made tangible results already, twelve motorcycles have been delivered in Flores Indonesia for the Health Ministry and NGOs to bring vaccines and primary medical care to remote areas.

Donations of $20 or more are rewarded with a collectable pin and periodic e-mail updates along the journey. Donors over $200 may add a sticker to the bike, the 'Overlander', and get a link on the millennium-ride.com web site. Rob Rasor, president of the American Motorcyclist Association, has helped Milward establish a 501(c)3 organization, Motorcycle Outreach, so American donations are tax-exempt.
