Hello Simon,

Things have been busy for me since I've returned. I meant to let you know how things went long before now.

I spent a few hours with Dr Meda and the motor pool mechanic Paco. Unfortunately there was only one rider at the health dept. and he was not interested in learning maintenance. Although I spent the most time on his bike. A Yamaha 250, every possible adjustment was out. I adjusted everything on it from the brakes to the spark plug. There was a lady in the health dept who spoke some English so I was able to communicate ok.

It is hard for me to know how much help I really was. I spent most of the time trying to convince Paco in the importance of regular maintenance. which I think he understood but they all seem frustrated by the lack of funding. Also since he is only the mechanic he said the riders dont bring the bikes in until something is already wrong. Education of the riders and some sort of regular inspection and maintenance is where they are lacking. Motivation is low because of lack of funding as I am sure you have experienced.

A friend of mine donated some money for tools and supplies as well as some tools I donated too. This was where I felt that my visit there was most helpful. I took quite a collection of hand tools, a wide assortment of electrical items a few each spark plug gap tools and air gauges as well as some chain lube and cable life. They where most grateful. Paco was most excited with the gapping tools. judging by the plugs I saw I dont think He had ever used one.

I only worked on 2 bikes one of which needed front brake parts which they could not afford. the other I described above(which when I rode had no brakes purely from lack of adjustment). They were so grateful of my time and the tools that by 1pm they refused to let me work any longer and took me out sight seeing.

I am getting ready for a Spanish course and plan to return to Guatemala in November maybe I will get the chance to help more then. Thanks so much for your assistance it was an unforgettable experience that I would not have gotten without you. I hope your travels carry you over smooth roads

Chris Valliant
