Millennium Motorcycle Ride, start 4 December 1999 UK

Dear Sponsors

Test-riding the round the world motorcycle will now take place later this month or early next, fingers crossed, as it is now about 80% made. It looks real nice and appears very strong - there will be some pics on the website any day now and a spec list and other details to follow.

I had 11 vaccinations in August: the Japanese Encephalitis (3 injections in 28 days like rabies) was made from infected mouse brain. Ahh, it feels good to be alive! I'm now going to start a month trial course of Lariam (one of the anti-Malaria options) with side effects listed as: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, loss of balance, headache, sleep disorders and mood swings. The adventure wasn't supposed to be like this! Other vaccinations are Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Yellow fever, Typhoid, Polio, Meningitis M, Tetanus, Russian Diptheria.

Survival training by the British Army was useful, taking most of the day and covering just a few of the more important techniques: finding and making water safe, creating fire (the stone-age technique still works) and of course making the survival pack. This is a tobacco tin full of 23 goodies like potassium manganate (great for making fire, cleaning water & wounds) and a condom for transporting water. I tried (successfully but not without infection) once to put a stitch in my cut hand, skin is tough but the thought of it is the biggest hurdle. Anyway that is done with a sutra (sterile needle and thread) to be had from the local hospital. I hope I won't have to drink my own piss - at least not without sun-distilling it anyway.

The small pile of things to take is getting bigger - I wonder how much of it will eventually fit on the bike.

If you can help generate interest in the website at www.millennium-ride.com I'd be very grateful indeed. We have now raised just over 2000 Euro for humanitarian medical aid.

Take care, Simon Milward
