Taxi drivers in Istanbul have an additional horn, goes "wheep, wheep" in a high-pitched way. Then I heard a Dispatch Rider in London with one that made a noise like a chicken, clearly audible at 100 yards - way cool!

So I was surfing eBay, as you do, and noticed lots of these.

Seemed to go for about £10, P&P included, so I thought Why Not ?

And here, as a public service to you, is motorcycle.co.uk's tenners-worth.

Loudness

Bloody 'ell, that's loud. Wired it up to a battery on the bench and nearly s**t myself. Yes, its loud.

What noises do they make ?

6 different 'sirens'. I guess they are copies of police, fire, ambulance, including a 'parp, parp' one - like American Fire Engines, I think. It will be illegal to use these on the road unless you are an emergency vehicle.

Installation

The siren unit is physically bigger than you think, about 5" by 4"

Quite heavy, its a metal and plastic construction. Mounting bracket looks reasonable

The controller is 3" by 2", light plastic, comes with a sticky pad for sticking it on the dash. This unit is not likely to be waterproof.

Clearly designed for car use, you might have to get creative with the installation on a bike. If you don't have a fairing, you are going to have to cram the siren in under the seat somewhere. If you have a fairing, you can lose it easy enough. There's bags of room in a BMW RT fairing - so we are told.

Supplied wiring is long enough from controller to siren, but you will need to splice in extra from your 12v supply to the controller.

Note Well - You can't bypass the controller and use a more subtle switch. Its the electrickery in the controller module that modulates the various noises. So you would need to mount the controller somewhere unobtrusive, but still reachable with a gloved hand. ... if you were going to use it on the road, which we aren't of course.

Is it legal ?

No.

Is it fun ?

Oh we are so resisting the temptation to go play in traffic........

Where did that guy get the chicken noise then ?

Just been wandering eBay again, and for 3 times as much money, there's one that claims 5 animal noises (Cow, Chicken, Dog, Bird, Horse). And you can get them from M & P for £40 Ah, that's what we need. It cannot be illegal to make a noise like a big chicken.

So if you see a rat-BMW RT fly through Edinburgh making like Old MacDonald's Farm, give us a wave :)
