How to Prepare For Winter Motorcycle Riding

The popularity of motorcycling has increased significantly over the past few years, with a vast range of machines available to suit all riders. Being the owner of a motorcycle has become a lifestyle choice. Many riders use their bike all year round as their principal means of transport, whilst others simply enjoy motorcycling as a stimulating weekend hobby.

Winter Motorcycling Clothing

The greatest problem experienced by winter motorcyclists is, rather obviously, getting cold particularly given the wind chill factor at speed. Becoming cold and wet impedes the concentration of a rider. Appropriate clothing for winter riding needs to be warm, comfortable and tough enough to provide protection in the evident of an accident.

Gloves

Wearing appropriate gloves is imperative when riding. Thick winter gloves are available for the coldest weather. Otherwise, medium-weight, waterproof gloves should be adequate. Avoid "ski-type" gloves, which although keeping hands warm and dry, offer no protection in the event of a fall. Heated models are also available, either battery powered or with a connection to the bike`s power supply.

Jackets

Leather jackets offer the best protection in a fall, while fabric jackets are more versatile, being suitable for all weathers. Waxed cotton is an appropriate alternatives. Inexpensive, lightweight waterproofs can be used in conjunction with 'Cordura'-type jackets and help cut down the wind chill factor, keeping the body warmer. Bulky, padded Ski jackets or `soft shells` tend to become inflated by the wind and may affect control of the bike. Furthermore, they offer no protection in a fall. The real key to success here is to take the same approach as skiers and to opt for a layered approach, from thermal underwear, through a mid layer which may include a vest and a sweatshirt and then onto the outer jacket.

Boots

"Proper" motorcycle boots are ideal for winter riding. However, in their absence, flat-soled, heavy walking boots or shoes, with ankle protection, should serve adequately, although steel toecaps should be avoided as these can interfere with freedom of movement and therefore pedal control.

Trousers

As with jackets, leather or fabric trousers are appropriate for winter riding, leather again offering better protection with fabric being more versatile for all-weather use. Tough denim jeans are a suitable alternative, but must be a good fit, especially at the bottom of the legs. Heavy-duty, double-layer motorcycling jeans can be bought. Long thermals will also significantly reduce wind chill.

Winter Motorcycling Safety Tips

In cold weather, air contracts, reducing tyre pressures. Be certain to check tyre pressures before riding, as under-inflated tyres can drastically affect the handling of the bike. Give the bike plenty of time to warm up to prevent problems. You need to give the oil time to warm up and circulate sufficiently before riding hard. Visored helmets are prone to "fogging" in winter weather. Several products are available to prevent this, or open the visor one notch, allowing air to circulate and keeping it clear.

With an awareness of the additional safety measures required, winter motorcycling can be as enlivening as at any other time.
